民航局日前邀請民航業者召開公聽會，研擬機齡超過26年的民航機退場。如果落實，平均機齡超過22年的遠東航空將首當其衝。遠航董事長張綱維今(23)日舉行記者會，強調遠航比任何人都更想汰換新飛機，希望民航局在實施法律之前能有緩衝期。
遠航目前有8架MD82／83型飛機，平均機齡超過22年。張綱維表示，遠航在今年引進2架ATR72-600型客機，已向民航局提交計畫書，預計在6年內將所有老舊的飛機汰除。
針對民航局與立委質疑遠航現有營運機隊過於老舊，張綱維表示，「遠東航空比任何人更想汰換舊飛機」，但是引進新飛機需要經過民航局5階段驗證才能開始營運，他說，聽說目前民航局人手吃緊，導致驗證階段從今年2月至今還未完成，預計最快2架ATR飛機能在11月投入營運。
張綱維說，舊飛機耗油、維修成本高、票價也低，其實一點都不想用舊飛機，他認為現有的機型是員工最熟悉，而且舊飛機是ok的飛機。他說，在新飛機引進後如果沒有充足訓練，貿然營運會有飛安的疑慮。他更強調，在公司完成重整後，才能開始跟銀行團與飛機租賃接觸。
張綱維說，遠航並不是不願意引進新飛機，之前曾經透過租賃公司引進波音737-800飛機，但是卻遇到糾紛，目前還在打國際官司中。他希望民航局在實施機齡限制法規之前，能有落日條款與3年的緩衝期。
針對先前有媒體報導，張綱維不想經營航空公司了，他覺得報導很「匪夷所思」，如果不玩了，他當年就不玩了，也不會招募200~300名原本復興航空的員工。不過，張綱維也坦承，在吸收了復興航空的舊員工後，的確出現了企業文化上摩合的問題。
根據遠航提交的計畫書，遠航預計在2023年前引進9架ATR72型飛機與10架空中巴士A320/321型噴射客機，並將舊有的MD機隊全汰除。張綱維期許遠航能夠成為國內機齡最年輕的航空公司。
